Summer Internship in Juneau, Alaska | July 2024

I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a dynamic summer internship program in Juneau, Alaska, focused on environmental science, indigenous cultures, and local ecosystems. The experience was a deep dive into the unique ecological and cultural landscape of Southeast Alaska.

  • Orientation & Cultural Immersion: Kicked off with a detailed orientation and a guided tour of local sites, including a welcome ceremony that set the tone for our journey.
  • Field Research & Environmental Studies: Participated in hands-on learning sessions, including foraging for medicinal plants, studying the impacts of glacier changes on ecosystems, and exploring NOAA facilities.
  • Community Engagement & Indigenous Knowledge: Engaged with local experts and indigenous leaders, such as Kolene James and Heather Batchelder, learning about the intersection of education, culture, and environmental stewardship in Southeast Alaska.
  • Practical Learning & Excursions: Enjoyed practical experiences like whale watching, gold panning, and salmon baking, alongside exploring the Alaska Coastal Rainforest and the Mendenhall Glacier.
  • Networking & Dialogue: Engaged in meaningful dialogues through the ANRODE program, focusing on decolonizing education and integrating indigenous knowledge into contemporary practices.
  • Cultural Exploration: Visited the Sealaska Heritage Institute and participated in a Clan House Visit, deepening our understanding of the region's rich cultural heritage.

This internship not only enhanced my understanding of environmental science and indigenous studies but also broadened my perspective on the importance of preserving cultural and ecological diversity. I’m excited to bring these insights into my future academic and professional endeavors.
